Step Up 3d
The Ask.
Disney Producers and DP Ken Seng asked for a meeting in Washington Square Park NYC to demo Hippotizer Media Servers for Step Up 3d. The demo took place in a directors tent during the middle of shooting. I demo’d Hippo for them and next thing I knew I was setting up a reactive video wall system in the Brooklyn Nave Yards.
What I did.
The producers wanted no down time, and all backgrounds to be consistent in every shot. To make that work I used timecode for the audio tracks to sync audio, video, and lighting. The coolest part was using the show audio to trigger a live plasma bridge behind the actors.
How I did it.
Timecode striped to the audio track distributed to all departments. A Video and Lighting Grand MA consoles received timecode independently that triggered the systems in sync with the audio and camera.
What I used to do it.
I used Grand MA Lighting desks to control Hippotizer via Grand MA Timelines and Hippo Timelines via timecode inputs. For content I created reactive media inside After FX. With generative particle effects using Particle Illusion.
