La Boheme Philadelphia Opera
The Ask.
Philadelphia Opera asked, “How can we have an interactive video painting without infrared cameras, motion tracking, or a giant touch screen.
What I did.
To provide interactivity without uber expensive technology or complex systems we used Opera Singers.
How I did it.
I asked the singer who would be doing the interactive painting if they were comfortable doing painting choreography to the beat of the music. His answer “I do that everything to the beat of the music.” I then worked with stage management and the content team to setup check points during the painting scene to keep the server system on tempo.
What I used to do it.
We did this two different ways for two different presentations of the Opera over two separate opera seasons. First was Grand Ma Lighting console using internal timecode programmed to the beat of the music to mimic the opera singers behavior. Second was done using a Watchout timeline to playback in time with the music.
